ORIKAZE: A Ribless Folded Paper Fan by KUMAnoTE
KUMAnoTE, a design firm based in Tokyo and headed by Hideyuki Kumagai, has introduced ORIKAZE, an innovative fan crafted from paper without conventional ribs. This unique creation, developed alongside Professor Jun Mitani from the University of Tsukuba, employs folded paper techniques, utilizing mountain and valley folds to create a self-sustaining, three-dimensional form that facilitates airflow. The debut collection features three distinct designs: SORA, KAZE, and TSUCHI, each showcasing unique shapes and surface textures. ORIKAZE also serves as a collaborative platform, with its first editions showcasing patterns from the Japanese fashion label SNEEUW and graphic designer COYA, inspired by yokai folklore. Produced entirely by Fukunaga Print Co., Ltd., the fan was unveiled at Interior Lifestyle Tokyo 2026 and is set to launch in summer 2026.
