Orient Express Venezia opens in 15th-century Palazzo Donà Giovannelli
Orient Express Venezia has opened in the 15th-century Palazzo Donà Giovannelli in Venice's Cannaregio district, designed by Lebanese architect Aline Asmar d'Amman. The hotel features restored neo-Gothic interiors by Giovanni Battista Meduna, including an octagonal staircase and frescoed reception rooms. Asmar d'Amman incorporated Venice's 'lost colours'—rich reds, ochres, blues, and greens—into the palette. Six Signature Suites span up to 145 square metres, retaining 19th-century frescoes and marble fireplaces. Dining includes La Casati, inspired by Marchesa Luisa Casati, and Heinz Beck Venezia, led by the three-Michelin-starred chef. The Wagon Bar references 1930s rail travel. A walled garden and spa with Roman, Venetian, and Ottoman influences offer tranquility. The restoration took nearly a decade, involving hundreds of artisans.
