Ophelia Staton on Sketchbooks as Creative Playgrounds

Artist Ophelia Staton credits her sketchbook as the foundation of her art education and creative practice. Her earliest memory of making art involves receiving a blank drawing pad and markers from her parents, which sparked a lifelong fascination with materials. Staton describes spending hours in art-supply stores, researching supplies, and using her sketchbook to test techniques without pressure. She emphasizes that the sketchbook is a judgment-free zone for experimentation, where she documents what works and what doesn't. The portability of the sketchbook allows her to carry a minimal toolkit—watercolor palette, colored pencils, and pens—wherever she goes. Staton views the sketchbook as a way to return to center, solve problems, and keep her work loose. Last month, she participated in Creativation by NAMTA, the annual conference for fine art and craft industry professionals, hosted by Golden Peak Media (parent company of Artists Network and Artists Magazine).
