OM System Achieves Full Independence from Private Equity, Aims for Competitive Edge
OM Digital Solutions, the company behind OM System cameras, has completed a management buyout from Japan Industrial Partners (JIP), achieving full independence. CEO Shigemi Sugimoto confirmed that the management team now holds 100% of the company's shares, with JIP no longer involved. The buyout, finalized in April, is intended to enable faster decision-making and greater investment in research and development, which Sugimoto says was previously constrained by JIP's private equity approach. In an exclusive interview with PetaPixel, Sugimoto explained that the new structure allows for more flexible, long-term investments in new technologies, product development, and manufacturing capabilities. He emphasized that the company can now pursue initiatives that strengthen future competitiveness without the caution required under JIP's ownership. Kazuhiro Togashi, Senior Vice President of Global Brand and Marketing Strategy, addressed concerns about the stagnation of Micro Four Thirds sensor development, stating that while the current sensor in the OM-1 and OM-3 series offers an optimal balance of resolution and read-out speed, the company is exploring new sensors and engines to meet customer expectations for higher resolution. The move is seen as a strategic shift to make OM System more competitive in the camera market.
