Office ParkScheerbarth Opens Berlin Techno Living Archive Beneath Former East German Power Station

architecture-design · 2026-10-18

A dormant basement beneath a former East Berlin power station has been converted into public space for the first time, with 3,400 square metres now accessible. Berlin studio Office ParkScheerbarth designed the intervention alongside Dimitri Hegemann, founder of the club Tresor, realizing a permanent Living Archive of techno culture that Hegemann had first announced in 2015. The exhibition "Dancefloors After 1989" functioned as a full-scale test of the concept, running for five weeks; during that period the studio handled permitting and devised the display, drawing on materials supplied by the building itself. Moojin Park and Benjamin Scheerbarth are the lead architects. Nina Vuga curated. Jan Bitter photographed the project. Engineering services came from hhp Berlin, with lighting consulting by Lars Murasch. The project is dated 2026 and falls under cultural architecture, adaptive reuse, and museum and exhibition interiors. By repurposing an unused subterranean level rather than building anew, the scheme ties the history of East Berlin club culture to the physical infrastructure that surrounded it.
