OF.Studio's 'Ecological Brutalist' Villa in Mendoza

London-based OF.Studio, founded by Argentine duo Sebastián Andía and Valentina Cerrone, has completed a contemporary villa in Mendoza, Argentina, that they describe as a new 'ecological brutalism.' The house is embedded into a hillside without removing any trees, using earth-colored concrete walls that mimic rock formations. The design prioritizes a dialectical relationship with the Monte Desert's topography, creating a sinuous volume that offers 360-degree views. The layout spans three levels: 'inside the earth' (basement), 'between the earth' (ground floor), and 'outside the earth' (first floor). A central kitchen connects to three staircases—wooden, concrete, and an external metal one leading to a roof terrace with a fireplace, hot tub, and planters. The project incorporates passive solar orientation, thermal insulation, natural ventilation, photovoltaic panels, solar thermal panels, and rainwater reuse. The clients, a family returning to Mendoza from Buenos Aires, sought a contemporary home immersed in nature. Photographs by Luis Abba document the project.
