Of Possible floats New York retreat on glacial boulders

Brooklyn-based firm Of Possible has completed The Findling, a retreat in Austerlitz, New York, elevated atop four 500-million-year-old glacial erratic boulders. The clients, two psychoanalysts, had a difficult prior building experience on the property and sought to restore their connection to the land. Founder Vincent Appel noted the house floats over an old New England wall at the edge of the woods. After timber columns proved over budget and stone lay below grade, Appel turned to Maine-based furniture-maker and poet Ethan Stebbins, who works with timber joinery and granite blocks. Two boulders came from the site; two more were sourced from a nearby quarry, each reinforced with 1-inch stainless steel pins.
