Observation.01 bench by KIBEKOUMUTEN uses material behavior as design method

KIBEKOUMUTEN Inc., led by designer Masahiro Kibe, has introduced Observation.01, a bench that incorporates material observation into its design approach. This creation showcases a powder-coated steel frame covered in Kvadrat Argo 2, a plush textile. Instead of simply draping the fabric over an established shape, the design process involved creating full-scale prototypes to study how the textile interacts at edges, corners, and contact points. The curved tubular steel frame supports the seating while ensuring the fabric remains the primary visual and tactile feature. This project captures a series of design decisions influenced by ongoing material interactions and is part of a larger research initiative focused on observation as a design strategy.
