Obscured Portraits: Seen and Unseen at National Center of Photography and Images, Taipei

exhibition · 2026-09-25

Obscured Portraits: Seen and Unseen, a dual-part group exhibition, is currently on display at the National Center of Photography and Images in Taipei from 22 May to 26 October. The first segment, Boundaries of the Gaze, showcases 49 pieces created by 24 artists or collaborations worldwide, including Gerardo Nigenda, a blind photographer whose work features embossed braille. Visitors with sight can experience a simulation of blindness as they navigate a dimly lit space using a railing marked with nubs that represent nine raised-line drawings. Accessibility features include braille overlays, raised-line reproductions, and audio descriptions. The second segment, Perceptions Beyond Sight, includes 25 works from 16 Taiwanese artists, exploring contemporary depictions of blindness and disability. This exhibition will be reviewed in the Autumn 2026 edition of ArtReview Asia.
