Object of Devotion: Laurinkoski and Sumari at Skånes Konstförening

In Malmö, Skånes Konstförening is hosting 'Object of Devotion', a two-artist exhibition curated by Tawanda Appiah, featuring Finnish creators Ville Laurinkoski and Matti Sumari from 15 May to 14 June 2026. This exhibition repurposes industrial and household remnants—such as ventilation ducts, scrap metal, urinal dividers, and bookshelves—into focal points of contemplation. Sumari's piece, 'We can’t sing but we do', combines found materials with stainless steel, bronze, and anodised aluminium into human-like formations. Laurinkoski’s work, 'Le Gay Voyage, Frère Angelo', reimagines furniture as theatrical backdrops, including vibrant magenta bookshelves. A sound installation plays a Finnish youth hymn alongside readings from Guy Hocquenghem on AIDS. Laurinkoski's performance, 'Les voyages et aventures extraordinaires du frère Angelo', engages the audience through voice and lecture. The exhibition space, a repurposed textile mill, showcases exposed pipework that enhances the artworks. Both artists collect materials from Malmö’s post-industrial sites, including landfills and a defunct ketchup factory where Sumari maintains his studio. This exhibition redefines devotion as a cycle of return rather than mere reverence, highlighting weld marks, dents, and glue traces as the true focus.
