Oberon: New Museum's First Full-Service Restaurant Opens with OMA Design

Oberon, the first full-service restaurant at the newly expanded New Museum in New York, opened in July 2026. Named after the fairy king in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, it is operated by Oberon Group, a sustainability-focused hospitality company founded by Henry Rich, known for Brooklyn spots like Rucola, Rhodora, and June. The restaurant is designed by OMA, the same firm behind the museum's expansion. Interiors feature contrasting metal and time-worn wood, with an interactive bar by artist Ian Cheng and tables and lamps by designer Minjae Kim. Uniforms made of muslin are by fashion designer Mary Ping. Executive chef Julia Sherman, known for her Instagram @SaladForPresident and cookbook Salad for President: A Cookbook Inspired by Artists, created an ingredient-driven menu including red snapper crudo with bergamot, Greek diner salad with grilled dolma, smoked caesar salad, fig leaf chicken, and hanger steak with raspberry vinaigrette. Rich and Sherman aim to create a neighborhood restaurant for the art world that balances sustainability, art, food, and community, catering to collectors, gallerists, artists, and museum visitors. The restaurant emphasizes zero-waste practices and uses cork in walls to reduce embodied carbon. Sherman collaborates with artists through food, and Rich notes the restaurant's mission aligns with nonprofit cultural institutions.
