Oakland Hills Clubhouse Rebuilt with Intumescent Fireblocking After 2022 Fire
In February 2022, a fire ravaged the century-old clubhouse at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, a renowned golf site that has hosted multiple U.S. Opens and PGA events. The fire severely damaged the building's structure and obliterated over a hundred years of golfing heritage. The Oakland Hills Heritage Committee decided to preserve the original design by using wood cladding for the exterior. During the planning phase, the project team discovered that the wooden exterior triggered Section 718.2.6 of the International Building Code (IBC), necessitating fireblocking in 100-square-foot sections. To address this, architects incorporated Tenmat's FF102/50 Intumescent Fire Block into the exterior wall assembly, which met rigorous standards while allowing for ventilation and moisture management. The clubhouse was beautifully restored by Spring 2026.
