North American Pedestrian Malls Stage a Comeback After Decades of Decline

architecture-design · 2026-10-03

North American city centers are experiencing a surge in pedestrian-friendly initiatives, marking a shift away from previous car-dominated policies. Over the summer, Vancouver transformed a five-block segment of Granville Street in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, extending the closure to September 7 due to its success. Seattle has prohibited private vehicles in Pike Place Market, while Madison, Wisconsin, made State Street car-free last year, and Philadelphia implemented similar measures on Benjamin Franklin Parkway earlier this year. In June, Calgary's Stephen Avenue completed its revitalization, and Minneapolis is currently discussing the future of Nicollet Mall. Professor Kelly Gregg highlights a growing emphasis on pedestrian access. The initial wave of pedestrian malls began in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1959. Downtown Vancouver has hosted numerous events, with CEO Jane Talbot endorsing this seasonal initiative.
