Norman Foster to Design Monumental 'Porta della Speranza' at Matera Prison
Norman Foster, the Pritzker Prize-winning British architect known for the Reichstag dome and the British Museum's Great Court, will design a monumental gate in front of Matera's prison. Called the Porta della Speranza, the threshold is conceived to link the penitentiary path, reintegration into society, and the responsibility of the civil community. The project accompanies Matera Capitale mediterranea della cultura e del dialogo 2026 and originates within a program promoted by the Holy See together with the Dipartimento dell'Amministrazione Penitenziaria. Italy's Ministero della Giustizia and Ministero della Cultura are also involved. Foster described the commission as an opportunity to create a deeply symbolic work, a sign of great culture and civilization. The news draws its force from the relationship between author and place.
