Noore Yazigi Brings Arabic Calligraphy Tattoos to Brooklyn

Noore Yazigi, a tattoo artist of Lebanese-Palestinian descent, is known for her expertise in Arabic calligraphy tattoos at Monolith Studio in Brooklyn. She has the word "Palestine" prominently inked on her wrist. A fluent Arabic speaker, Yazigi works alongside master calligrapher Josh Berer, who obtained his ijazah after eight years of study in Washington, DC. Berer creates the calligraphy designs, which Yazigi then tattoos, catering to many Muslim clients interested in cultural or religious symbols. Among her clients is Lebanese journalist Reina Sultan, who had "sabr" (patience) and "shukr" (gratitude) tattooed on her shoulders in 2025, and Palestinian-Irish consultant Rakan Nimr, whose tattoo, completed in 2024, features Berer's design of Refaat Alareer's poem "If I Must Die" (2011). Growing up in Upstate New York, Yazigi remembers Arabic script in her home decor and drew cartoonish designs with Arabic words, such as a monster saying "majnun" (crazy). While Berer does not tattoo Quranic verses, Yazigi's work navigates the complexities of tattoos being considered haram in Islam, emphasizing respect for the script's significance.
