NOMAL and ONJIUM Housing Studio Complete Toad House Hanok in Seochon, South Korea

architecture-design · 2026-09-11

A 92 m² residence named Dookkuubi Jib (Toad House) in Seochon, South Korea, was designed by NOMAL and ONJIUM Housing Studio, with completion dated to 2026. The project was curated by Miwa Negoro and photographed by Roh Kyung. The architectural team comprised Minyuk Chai, Bokki Lee, Seyeon Cho and Eungyo Lee of NOMAL, alongside Bonryol Kim, Chaewon Park, Jaioh Lee and Yeaeun Lee of ONJIUM Housing Studio. Engineering support came from Hwan Structural Engineering, Chung lim Mechanical Engineering & Consultant, and Chunil Engineering.co., LTD. The clients were an English husband and a Korean wife who had been living in Dubai; having spent many years outside Korea, they encountered the hanok not as a familiar family housing type but as something they were experiencing almost for the first time. The design draws on the Korean children's rhyme invoking the toad: "Toad, little toad, take away the old house and give me a new one."
