NODE Architecture & Urbanism Unveils Ultra-Small Infrastructure Projects in Shenzhen and Guangzhou

NODE Architecture & Urbanism, led by Doreen Heng Liu, has completed a series of ultra-small infrastructure buildings across Shenzhen and Guangzhou, China. The projects include the renovation of a public restroom at Route 1 Bus Terminal in Guangzhou's Dongshankou historic district, the Yantian Reservoir Management Building, and a pump station in Guangming Science City. The restroom renovation, commissioned by the Guangzhou Yuexiu District Urban Management and Comprehensive Law Enforcement Bureau, retained the existing two-story brick-concrete structure, reorganizing it to improve accessibility, capacity, and integration with the neighborhood's Lingnan architectural character and red-brick heritage. The Yantian Reservoir Management Building, developed by Shenzhen Pumped Storage Power Generation Co., Ltd., involved design development and construction drawing by Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (Shenzhen), with interior and lighting design by the same institute and Shenzhen Langsheng Lighting Design Co., Ltd. The pump station in Guangming Science City was jointly designed by Shenzhen Water Planning & Design Institute Co., Ltd. and NODE, with schematic design by Huang Zanning, Huang Guoliang, and Huang Jiebin. All projects emphasize minimal footprint and contextual sensitivity, reflecting a trend in Chinese urbanism toward small-scale interventions. The designs were curated by Han Shuang, with photographs by Chao Zhang.
