NMAO Opens 50th Anniversary Collection Exhibition Spanning Cézanne to 1960s

The National Museum of Art, Osaka (NMAO) has launched 'Toward the 50th Anniversary Collection 1: Self / Action,' the first of two installments leading up to its 50th anniversary in 2027. The exhibition runs from July 19 to November 3, 2026, drawing exclusively from the museum's holdings to trace art historical developments from Paul Cézanne through the mid-1960s. Key works include Cézanne's 'La préparation du banquet' (c.1890), Alberto Giacometti's 'Homme' (1956), Kazuo Shiraga's 'Tenyusei Hyoshito' (1959), and Atsuko Tanaka's 'Gate of Hell' (1965-69). The show also features Japanese artists Nobuya Abe, Akirako Tahata, and Korean artist Insik Quac, alongside Ruth Asawa's wire sculpture from c.1965. NMAO originally opened in 1977 at Expo '70 Commemorative Park in Suita before relocating to Nakanoshima in 2004. The exhibition is sponsored by the Daikin Foundation for Contemporary Arts.
