Niu Lai: China's Ugly Animation Becomes Unlikely Box-Office Hit

A microbudget 3D animated film titled 'Niu Lai' (牛来, literally 'Here Comes the Cow'), produced by a mother-son duo from Dalian, has become a viral box-office phenomenon in China despite its crude visuals and initial failure. The film, directed by 34-year-old Xin Yumeng and his mother Sun Lifang, opened on August 5, 2026, in a few hundred theaters with zero promotion, earning only 342 yuan (US$50) on its first day. However, around August 13-14, the movie went viral as netizens shared their disbelief at its primitive animation quality, contrasting sharply with mainstream productions. The 86-minute film follows a young calf named Niu Lai who is afraid to stand, befriending a skylark and a young leopard in a dreamlike adventure, eventually losing his mother to a wolf attack and learning life lessons. Xin and his mother handled all aspects of production—directing, writing, animation, voice acting, and music—making them the only two names in the credits. They registered the script in 2021, received a public-screening permit in 2024, and a distributor friend helped secure screenings despite advising against a theatrical release. The film's success has propelled it into the top ten of the year's domestic animated releases, sparking debates about shifting cultural sentiments and the power of participatory memes.
