Nikken Sekkei Completes Jing'An Investment Center in Shanghai

The Jing'An Investment Center (JIC), designed by Nikken Sekkei, has opened in Shanghai's Jing'An District. The 199,000-square-meter mixed-use development integrates offices, retail, and residential functions adjacent to Nanjing West Road. A 180-meter-tall super-high-rise tower anchors the site, while preserved historic buildings at the lower level are revitalized and incorporated into the project. The design draws on the traditional 'Lilong' communal housing typology, extending its alleyway-based social spaces vertically as a 'three-dimensional Lilong'. A three-dimensional circulation route connects preserved low-rise buildings to sky gardens and lounges in the tower, drawing urban bustle upward. The project aims to transcend the dichotomy of preservation versus development, presenting a model for urban regeneration that passes the city's memories to the future. Completion year is 2024.
