Nieves González Blends Baroque Portraiture with Puffer Coats

Nieves González, a talented artist from Spain, merges the rich style of 17th-century Baroque with contemporary fashion in her stunning oil portraits. She portrays women wearing puffer coats and parkas, drawing inspiration from renowned Spanish artists like El Greco, Diego Velázquez, and Bartolomé Murillo, as well as Caravaggio's dynamic light and shadow techniques. Her solo exhibition, called 'A Friendship Story,' is on view at the Richard Heller Gallery in Santa Monica until July 25. With a nod to the viral 2023 meme of Pope Francis in a puffer coat, González aims to stir genuine feelings through her works, including 'Beati coloro che danzano all'alba del giorno' (2025) and 'The runaway I' (2026). She seeks to create art that feels vibrant and alive, rather than merely nostalgic.
