New York Historical opens $175m Tang Wing for American Democracy

On June 18, 2026, the New York Historical Society in Manhattan will debut the Tang Wing for American Democracy, an extension spanning 71,000 sq. ft. This $175 million project, crafted by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, was realized over three years, supported by $75 million in public funding and $100 million in private donations, notably including $20 million from financier Oscar Tang and archaeologist Agnes Hsu-Tang. The new wing will feature the Stuart and Jane Weitzman Shoe Museum, the American LGBTQ+ Museum (set to open in late 2027), and two exhibition spaces: the Klingenstein Family Gallery with its first exhibit, Democracy Matters (June 18–November 1), and the Joyce B. Cowin Gallery showcasing Elie Nadelman sculptures. Additionally, it will include a conservation studio, classrooms, and an 11-floor storage tower for the Patricia D. Klingenstein Library. The museum's Academy for American Democracy will expand its reach to 30,000 sixth-graders annually, a significant increase from 3,000. The Tangs have also contributed 150 artworks by Indigenous artists, with pieces displayed in House Made of Dawn (on view until August 16). Furthermore, a second Tang Wing is anticipated at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, designed by Frida Escobedo and scheduled to open in 2030.
