New York Historical Museum Opens Democracy Wing Ahead of US Semiquincentennial

The New York Historical Museum, the oldest museum in New York City founded in 1804, inaugurated a new wing dedicated to the history of US democracy on Thursday, July 4, 2025, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of American independence. Director Louise Mirrer called the opening a milestone. The multi-story addition features a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of Central Park and houses artworks, photographs, and historical artifacts, including the wooden chair on which George Washington was declared the first US president in 1789. Starting in 2028, the building will also host the American LGBTQ+ Museum, which will chronicle the histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other community members. The 1969 Stonewall uprising at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan's Greenwich Village is widely regarded as the birth of the US LGBTQ+ movement. The museum's focus on democracy comes amid concerns from critics that President Donald Trump's autocratic tendencies threaten US democratic institutions, with his administration recently curtailing LGBTQ+ rights.
