New York City to Install 17 Throne Labs Public Restrooms Across All Five Boroughs

On September 16, the Mayor's Office revealed a plan to introduce 17 modular public restrooms designed by Throne Labs across New York City, commencing that week with a one-year trial. Throne Labs, located in Charlottesville, Virginia, was awarded a $4 million RFP in January by the Mamdani administration, with the NYC Economic Development Corporation declaring them the winner in June. These units, which do not need water, sewer, or power connections, will be situated in areas with limited public restroom access. Users can access them via text, QR code, the Throne Bathroom Network app, or a tap card. The restrooms will be installed in the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Staten Island and will include baby changing tables. Mayor Mamdani emphasized that the pilot's goal is to provide clean and accessible facilities.
