New VTOL Aircraft from Hill Helicopters, Bell Textron, Airbus, and Startups Challenge Traditional Helicopter Market

Jason Hill, the founder of Hill Helicopters, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of innovation in helicopter design since the 1970s. He aims to shake up the industry with the HX50, a helicopter inspired by supercars, equipped with a UK-manufactured jet engine. The first engine tests are scheduled for May 2024, with test flights expected by the end of the year. Priced at £675,000, it appeals to owner-operators and includes features like auto-pilot, iPad-based navigation, and a digital cockpit, already receiving 1,458 pre-orders from over 70 nations. Meanwhile, Bell Textron, in collaboration with DARPA, has finalized a design review for the Sprint X-76 HSVTOL, a military hybrid aircraft set for 2028. Airbus Helicopters is testing its Racer prototype, targeting a cruise speed of 273mph and improved fuel efficiency. Additionally, Doroni Aerospace introduced the H1-X eVTOL in March 2024, and Pivotal Helix has developed a single-seat electric VTOL that doesn't require a pilot's license in the US. Aska A5 is also in production as a roadable electric VTOL. Hill emphasizes that for helicopters to thrive, they must be as appealing as luxury vehicles.
