Neue Galerie New York Marks 25 Years with Masterworks Anniversary Exhibition

Neue Galerie New York celebrates its 25th anniversary with a building-wide exhibition, Masterworks from the Neue Galerie: 25th Anniversary Exhibition, occupying its Museum Mile landmark at 86th Street and Fifth Avenue. The show pairs crown jewels of the permanent collection with private loans, surveying European modernism from 1890 to 1940 across every gallery floor. Vienna 1900 is represented by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka and the Wiener Werkstätte, including Klimt's 1907 portrait Adele Bloch-Bauer I ("The Woman in Gold"), shown with landscapes and preliminary drawings that trace his gold-leaf ornamentation. German Expressionism and Die Brücke appear through Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Emil Nolde; Neue Sachlichkeit and Weimar realism through Otto Dix, George Grosz and Max Beckmann. Furniture by Josef Hoffmann and Adolf Loos is integrated with fine art, silverwork and rare graphic editions in a Gesamtkunstwerk presentation. Since opening in 2001, the museum has shaped how international audiences read turn-of-the-century Central European art. Address: 1048 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10028; open Thursday to Monday, 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, closed Tuesday and Wednesday; timed-entry tickets recommended via the museum website.
