Neri&Hu wraps Hong Kong's Mandarin Oriental in terracotta 'urban tapestry'

Shanghai-based architecture studio Neri&Hu has completed a new facade for the Mandarin Oriental The Landmark hotel in Hong Kong's Central district, using staggered terracotta tiles to evoke a woven tapestry. The facade covers a former Harvey Nichols department store, replacing an angled glass structure with a solid, opaque ceramic surface. Custom cast terracotta tiles are arranged in a zigzag pattern, supported by darkened bronze metal shelves, with cast glass tiles added for nighttime illumination. The design aims to unify the fragmented facade and ground-floor storefront, celebrating Hong Kong's tradition of intricate tile and metalwork. The hotel was recently renovated by Joyce Wang Studio, with Neri&Hu handling the exterior. The studio, founded by Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu in 2006, is known for context-responsive projects.
