Neel Buddhadev's Villa Corsica: A Sculptural Home in Mumbai

Local architect Neel Buddhadev has completed Villa Corsica, a 280-square-metre residence in suburban Mumbai designed as a 'sculptural installation' in response to the city's tropical climate. The house was created in collaboration with Virtue – Architect Cleon Colaco & Associates for a multi-generational family with accessibility needs. Organized around the sun's path, the layout uses large northern openings for daylight and cross-ventilation, while southern corridors reduce heat gain. Constructed from reinforced cement concrete and burnt-clay brick, the home features a winding ramp for wheelchair access. Curved walls and bold colours—bordeaux, blue, green, grey, and black—define each space, with white flooring and grey window frames providing contrast. Artworks by French artist Sophie Dloussky serve as focal points. A bordeaux staircase clad in vitrified tiles connects floors, and upper-level bathrooms act as thermal buffers. The kitchen is finished in black and grey tones. A multifunctional partition serves as both a dining table and television unit. Buddhadev cited his family's background in creative advertising as an influence on the architectural language.
