Ndidi Emefiele's 'Inarrestabile' Challenges Stereotypes at Palazzo SUMS

Nigerian painter Ndidi Emefiele (b. 1987, Abuja; lives between Northampton, UK, and Nigeria) presents her first solo exhibition in Italy, 'Inarrestabile', curated by Riccardo Freddo in collaboration with Rosenfeld Gallery (London) at Palazzo SUMS in the Republic of San Marino, running until September 3, 2026. The show features 16 paintings created between 2022 and 2025. Emefiele's vibrant depictions of women subvert stereotypical representations of African femininity, presenting empowered figures who demand to be seen on their own terms. Her work draws on personal experience—growing up with four sisters in a female-headed household—and incorporates elements from Yoruba sculpture (exaggerated heads symbolizing wisdom and the soul), comic painting, and African folklore. Animals in her paintings act as spiritual intermediaries, a third eye connecting to the supernatural. Emefiele uses protective motifs like sunglasses, compact discs, and vintage watch frames to shield her subjects from a hostile society. Her paintings are held in prestigious collections including MoCADA (Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts) in New York and the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina.
