Nam June Paik Retrospective Marks 20 Years Since His Death at Tokyo's Watari-um

exhibition · 2026-04-27

From July 19 to November 23, 2026, the Watari Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo presents a three-level exhibition titled "Nam June Paik: The 20th anniversary of his passing." Celebrated as the "father of video art," the South Korean artist passed away in 2006. The ground floor immerses visitors in a dimly lit space adorned with wooden debris, tropical plants, and vintage televisions, featuring TV Egg (1982). An enveloping soundscape blends various audio tracks, while screens showcase footage of Paik's early performances. Notable pieces include Time in Triangular and Forest of Cage / Revelation of the Forest, both created in 1993. The upper level highlights Candle TV (1968). Annette Meier, assistant editor at ArtAsiaPacific, authored the review.
