MVRDV-led team unveils €27.5M GAM Torino renovation with public piazza and visible storage
The GAM (Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea) in Turin has presented a €27.5 million regeneration project led by MVRDV, Balance Architettura, and EP&S Group, winners of an international competition with 49 teams. Funded by Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, the plan expands exhibition space from 4,300 to nearly 7,000 sqm, including over 1,800 sqm of newly accessible basement storage inspired by MVRDV's Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. The ground floor will become a public piazza with a restaurant, educational areas, and an auditorium, while the building's brutalist architecture by Carlo Bassi and Goffredo Boschetti will be upgraded for energy efficiency and LEED certification. Construction may begin in 2027, aligning with Turin's bid for European Capital of Culture 2033. Currently, only 2% of the museum's nearly 50,000 works are on view.
