Mussolini's Final Days: Execution and Public Display in Milan

Benito Mussolini, Italy's fascist dictator, met his end on April 28, 1945, when he was executed by communist partisans near Lake Como. After being ousted from power in July 1943 and rescued by German commandos in September 1943, Mussolini led the German-controlled Italian Social Republic (RSI) from Salò. As Allied forces advanced and partisan uprisings intensified, Mussolini attempted to flee to Switzerland with his mistress Claretta Petacci. They were captured by the 52nd Garibaldi Brigade near Dongo on April 27. The following day, partisan Walter Audisio shot both Mussolini and Petacci in Giulino di Mezzegra. Their bodies were transported to Milan and hung upside down at Piazzale Loreto, where crowds desecrated them. Mussolini was later buried in an unmarked grave, and in 1957 his remains were reinterred in his hometown of Predappio. The exact order to kill Mussolini remains disputed, with some attributing it to Communist Party leader Palmiro Togliatti, though no definitive evidence has emerged.
