Museum of Life and Science Launches Sixth Season at Durham Farmers' Market

The Museum of Life and Science has initiated its sixth annual participation at the Durham Farmers' Market, extending its educational outreach beyond its 84-acre campus. This initiative provides free resources to Durham residents who face challenges accessing the museum's main location. The program focuses on topics including food systems, climate impacts, environmental equity, and social justice, aiming to make these subjects accessible to younger audiences. During market events, biology doctoral candidates from North Carolina State University presented a curriculum on food justice, explaining agricultural and nutritional systems to attendees. Participants received educational materials and buttons declaring 'I am a scientist.' The market serves as a community hub offering fresh produce, art, and entertainment in downtown Durham, with equitable pricing to ensure broad accessibility. A youth program called Sprouts Club engages children with activities about nutrition, seasonal eating, gardening, and composting, providing participants with currency to make purchases at vendor stalls. Additionally, the museum has begun a new partnership with the Black Farmers' Market, holding its inaugural event on May 5 at Durham Technical Community College, with plans for monthly gatherings on the first Sunday of each month.
