Pollock and Brancusi Shatter Records at Christie's Newhouse Sale

At Christie's in New York, Jackson Pollock's Number 7A (1948) fetched $181.2 million, establishing a new auction high for Abstract Expressionism. The artwork, which had an initial estimate of $100 million, was part of S.I. Newhouse's collection, which achieved a total of $630.8 million in sales. Created when Pollock was 36 in East Hampton, New York, this piece was the final 'drip' painting still in private ownership. The successful bidder, communicating with Alex Rotter, acquired it for a hammer price of $157 million. Newhouse purchased it from A. Alfred Taubman in 2000. The previous record for a Pollock was $61.2 million, set in 2021. Additionally, Constantin Brancusi's Danaïde (1913) sold for $107.6 million, marking a new high for the artist.
