Museum of Life and Science Announces Passing of Resident Bear Gus

The Museum of Life and Science has reported the death of Gus, an 18-year-old American black bear who resided at the institution. Following behavioral changes observed by animal care staff, veterinarians from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine conducted medical examinations that revealed an inoperable chest mass. Due to his age and condition, the decision was made to euthanize the bear. Gus arrived at the museum in 2006 as an orphaned cub after being found by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, and became a popular attraction known for raising several cubs. His biological samples are being shared with four cancer research facilities for scientific study.
