Museum Ludwig's 50th Anniversary Show 'Along the Color Line' Explores Black Diaspora and Transatlantic Modernism

Museum Ludwig in Cologne celebrates its 50th anniversary with the exhibition 'Along the Color Line: Traces of a Transatlantic Modernism.' This showcase delves into the ties between the Black diaspora and European modernism, drawing inspiration from the works of African American sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois. Curated by Eboa Itondo, it features modern and contemporary Black diaspora artists alongside pieces from the museum's collection, including painting, sculpture, literature, and music. The exhibition emphasizes movements like the Harlem Renaissance and Négritude, addressing the historical lack of Black artists in European museums. Artists such as Mildred Thompson, Herbert Gentry, and Iba Ndiaye provide fresh viewpoints on modernism, while James Gregory Atkinson's nonlinear archive links early 20th-century narratives with current Black diasporic experiences. This exhibition, running until 7 March 2027, encourages viewers to explore themes of identity, community, migration, and belonging.
