Museum Kurhaus Kleve's 'something that flees the hands' Explores Institutional Critique

Museum Kurhaus Kleve (MKK) and Residence NRW+ present 'something that flees the hands', an exhibition running until June 28, 2026. Curated by Anneliese Ostertag and Antoine Simeão Schalk, the show features seven international artists whose works dialogue with the museum's collection display, questioning epistemological premises of museums and resisting conventional temporal sequences. Artists include Tobias Hohn, Stanton Taylor, Xheneta Imeri, Wisrah C. V. da R. Celestino, Arthur Stachurski, Rashiyah Elanga, Hanni Kamaly, and Sultan Çoban, alongside a work by Mona Hatoum from the MKK collection. Hohn and Taylor's large-scale photograph documents artefacts at the Military History Museum in Dresden, obscured by reflections. Imeri uses archival materials tied to her father's naturalization process. Celestino's works intervene with a copy of the museum's master key and a radio with receipt. Stachurski's bronze reliefs depict prison bars. Elanga's staged images juxtapose Congolese banknotes with everyday items. Kamaly's steel sculpture references victims of racist violence, including Amad Ahmad who died in Kleve in 2018. Çoban's installation occupies the municipal wedding room. Hatoum's silicone walking stick undermines stability.
