Museo Oteiza Extends Basque Sculptors Exhibition to 2026

The Museo Oteiza in Alzuza, Spain, has announced an extension of its exhibition "Basterretxea-Oteiza. El problema del espacio" until October 25, 2026. The show explores the artistic and personal connections between Basque sculptors Néstor Basterretxea and Jorge Oteiza, both key figures in the renewal of Spanish art in the second half of the 20th century. Featuring eighty pieces, original documents, photographs, and unpublished materials, the exhibition offers a fresh perspective on their shared trajectory, highlighting both affinities and differences in their approaches to art, culture, and social function. The display revisits significant collaborative projects, including preparatory works for the Basilica of Arantzazu (1952-1955), an exhibition at Sala Neblí, the Casa de Irun (1958-1975), and the audiovisual piece "Operación H" (1963). It also covers the film project "Ama Lur" (1965-1968) and its connection to the GAUR group and the Basque School movement, as well as the project for the Fundación Sabino Arana from 1979. The extension provides continued access to this in-depth examination of two influential artists whose work was marked by experimentation and a commitment to collective cultural identity.
