Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga Examines Julio González as Painter and Draughtsman

exhibition · 2026-10-22

From 22 October 2026 to 17 January 2027, the Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga will showcase twenty-six pieces by Julio González. Among these, the only sculpture is Daphne, which he created in 1937, shortly before his passing. All artworks are part of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía collection, donated by his daughter, Roberta González, in 1973. González, who was born in Barcelona 150 years ago, initially trained in metalwork and drew inspiration from artists such as Degas, Puvis de Chavannes, and Picasso. Following the death of his brother Joan, he transitioned from painting to sculpture in the 1930s, with early works reflecting French symbolism and Catalan noucentisme, blending tradition with modernity, abstraction, and nature. He described his sculptures as "drawing in space."
