Murals of Heart Bypass Pioneer René Favaloro Dot Buenos Aires

In Buenos Aires, murals honoring Dr. René Favaloro, the Argentine cardiac surgeon credited with performing the first coronary artery bypass, can be found throughout the city. To celebrate the centenary of Favaloro's birth, street artist Maxi Bagnasco created a striking aerosol portrait measuring 22m by 12m on the façade of Fundación Favaloro Hospital Universitario, located at Avenida Belgrano 1746, in Monserrat in 2023. Earlier this year, graffiti artist Pintor One also contributed a realistic mural on the shutters of a paint store in San Martín. Additional works are located in Avellaneda and Sarandí, including one at Plaza René Favaloro. Born on 12 July 1923 in La Plata, Favaloro graduated from the National University of La Plata in 1949 and served as a rural doctor in Jacinto Arauz before joining the Cleveland Clinic in 1962. He made history in 1967 by performing the first coronary artery bypass using the great saphenous vein. After returning to Argentina in 1971, he established the Favaloro Foundation. He passed away on 29 July 2000 in Buenos Aires at the age of 77, and his legacy is further honored by a sculpture created by Alejandro Marmo.
