Mr. Edison Supper Club Opens in Philadelphia's Bellevue Hotel, Inspired by Thomas Edison

architecture-design · 2026-08-26

Restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow has opened Mr. Edison, a modern supper club inside Philadelphia's historic Bellevue Hotel. The concept originated when Chodorow noticed an old Edison Electric logo on a switchgear during a tour of the hotel, leading him to discover that Thomas Edison had electrified the entire building and designed some of its original lobby fixtures. Chodorow, known for treating lighting as a core design element in his restaurants, used this as the foundation for the venue. Spanish firm Clavel Arquitectos, led by Manuel Clavel, translated Edison's legacy into a 150-seat space where lighting is central. A 12-foot Ferris wheel suspended over the bar, inspired by the London Eye, adds a 'wow' moment. The culinary program, led by chef Matt Levin of Pineville Tavern, features regional ingredients and Philadelphia culinary history, including sturgeon caviar dip, Le Bec-Fin's crab galette, and Korean-style fried oysters. Cocktails like Patent Pending and Filament No. 6 nod to Edison's patents and experiments. The restaurant aims to honor the hotel's history and the future of Philadelphia's dining scene.
