Montréal modernist home renovation by Vives St-Laurent

Vives St-Laurent renovated a 1929 modernist residence on Montréal's South Shore, preserving its early-20th-century character while introducing contemporary touches. The three-storey house, wrapped in greenery, was purchased by a family who previously restored a Victorian property in Toronto. The design process addressed modest ceiling heights, pronounced roof slopes, and decades of modifications, distinguishing original features from later additions. The material palette includes white oak flooring, stained millwork, soft lacquered surfaces, painted moldings, honed Calacatta marble, ceramic tile, and a terracotta-toned floor. The ground floor now houses an entrance, shared bathroom, two offices, kitchen, dining area, and living room, with a glass partition for a semi-enclosed workspace. Restored elements include the fireplace, exposed beams, chimney, and original layout. Furniture features a Swedish midcentury armchair, Danish teak wall unit, Artek 60 stools, vintage Cesca chairs by Knoll, a red Stokke children's chair, and a Herman Miller Nelson Saucer suspension lamp.
