Monica Majoli, Millie Wilson and Susan Silton Headline Three New California Shows on Lesbian Art
Three simultaneous exhibitions in California highlight lesbian artists whose contributions have long been overlooked in the history of queer women's art. Central to this is Monica Majoli: Countervision, hosted by Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND), which features Majoli's recent drawings alongside archival materials from Sisterhood Bookstore and the Ovulars at the June L Mazer Lesbian Archives. As a 12-year-old in the late seventies, Majoli spent time at the now-defunct Sisterhood Bookstore, where she discovered a photograph of the Ovulars—feminists who conducted photography workshops at a lesbian commune in rural Oregon from 1979 to 1983. The exhibitions also bring attention to Millie Wilson and Susan Silton, addressing the historical neglect of queer women's artistic contributions.
