Monet to Matisse: Defying Tradition opens at AGSA as Australian exclusive

The Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) in Adelaide presents 'Monet to Matisse: Defying Tradition', a five-star exhibition featuring works loaned from the Toledo Museum of Art alongside pieces from AGSA's own collection. It is the inaugural show of the new AGSA Winter Series and an Australian exclusive. The exhibition includes Claude Monet's iconic 'Water Lilies' (c.1922), Paul Signac's pointillist 'Entrance to the Grand Canal, Venice' (1905), Giorgio de Chirico's 'Self-portrait' (c.1922) and 'Piazza d'Italia', Henri Matisse's lithographs 'Resting Model' and 'Standing Dancer', and works from his 'Jazz' portfolio. Smaller treasures include James Abbott McNeill Whistler's 'Crepuscule in Opal, Trouville', Paul Gauguin's woodcut 'Women at the river', and Richard Diebenkorn's 'Ocean Park No. 32' (1970), the most recent work. The exhibition is arranged thematically across seven sections, from 'Painting en Plein Air' to 'Figuration and Abstraction'. Despite minor criticisms of the title and some placement, the show is deemed excellent. Runs until 8 November.
