MOME Estudio Reimagines 1960s Madrid Apartment with Dark Wood Curved Volume

architecture-design · 2026-09-22

In Madrid's Embajadores neighborhood, MOME Estudio has transformed a 95-square-meter apartment by restoring its original framework and incorporating a large, curved dark wood structure around four pillars. By removing partitions, the design highlights the original grid of beams and pillars. This curved element, along with matching storage units, facilitates smooth circulation throughout the space. The design eliminates traditional corridors, creating an open layout where the kitchen, dining, and office areas flow seamlessly into private spaces, including the master bedroom, with transitions based on spatial positioning instead of doors. The material selection juxtaposes sand-toned walls and light wood flooring with the dark wood structure, while the kitchen showcases granite and dark cabinetry, and the bathroom features a vertical terracotta tile accent. Varying ceiling heights enhance movement, and the southeast orientation ensures ample natural light.
