MoMA to Show African Modernism in 'Freedom and Futures'

From May 2 to August 14, 2027, the Museum of Modern Art in New York will host the exhibition 'Freedom and Futures: Emancipatory Art in Africa, 1956–1982.' This showcase explores the role of African artists in the continent's independence and nation-building efforts during the decolonization era from 1956 to 1982. Curated by Ugochukwu-Smooth C. Nzewi alongside Erica DiBenedetto, the exhibition features works from notable artists such as Malangatana Valente Ngwenya, Uche Okeke, Mohammed Khadda, Thomas Mukarobgwa, and Amadou Seck. It highlights significant congresses and festivals in countries like Zimbabwe, Senegal, Algeria, Nigeria, and South Africa, illustrating the connections among artists and intellectuals who influenced liberation movements. The exhibition redefines African modernism, showcasing art as a medium for discussing citizenship, identity, solidarity, and envisioned futures.
