MoMA Screens Films to Mark 60 Years of Millennium Film Workshop
This October, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) will host screenings to celebrate the 60-year history of two pivotal institutions in New York's experimental film community: the Millennium Film Workshop and the Film-Makers' Cooperative. For over six decades, the Millennium Film Workshop has stood out as a place for creative expression and film experimentation, providing access to equipment, workshops, a gallery, and the Millennium Film Journal, which has nurtured a lively artistic community. The 1960s marked a shift with the introduction of the 35mm camera, expanding storytelling beyond typical high-budget films. A key moment in 1961 was when Cinema 16 rejected Stan Brakhage's Anticipation of the Night, leading to the formation of the New American Cinema Group by notable figures like Jonas Mekas and Shirley Clarke. That same year, the Film-Makers' Cooperative was created to preserve and share these emerging works. The upcoming MoMA screenings honor the rich legacy of these organizations in supporting experimental filmmaking in NYC.
