MoMA PS1's 'Hard Art' Examines Black Abstraction Across Three Generations
"Hard Art," set to open on November 5, 2026, at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, Queens, showcases the work of over 40 artists exploring the relationship between Black culture and abstraction from 1969 to the present. Curated by Connie Butler and Sheldon Gooch, the exhibition contrasts historical pieces with modern creations. It highlights significant works such as Frank Bowling's 5 + 1 (1969), The DeLuxe Show (1971), and Afro-American Abstraction (1980). Featured historical figures include Frank Bowling, Peter Bradley, and Barbara Chase-Riboud, while contemporary contributions come from artists like Torkwase Dyson, who offers a new commission, and Carolyn Lazard, who connects cinema with abstraction. An accompanying publication will include essays, and admission will be free, reaffirming the institution's ties to Black abstraction.
