Mokhallad Habib's Bullet Transformation Project Turns War Scars into Street Art

Mokhallad Habib, an Iraqi visual artist also referred to as Mukhaled Habeeb, leads the Bullet Transformation Project, a street art initiative that integrates actual bullet holes, cracks, and war-affected structures into his artwork. Through the use of simple painted lines, geometric shapes, and figurative elements, he reimagines signs of violence as birds, flowers, musical notes, animals, and human gestures. The original damage is preserved, with Habib crafting each piece around the existing marks, thus altering their visual interpretation while honoring their history. He embraces the coexistence of damage and artistic expression, ensuring that the project retains the physical traces of conflict while imbuing each scarred surface with fresh significance. Dubbed the 'Banksy of Iraq', Habib's work reflects the country’s struggles with war, memory, and rebuilding, emphasizing that the meaning of a damaged place can evolve rather than remain static.
