Modum Atelier renovates library at Chengdu Shude Experimental Middle School with multi-purpose design

architecture-design · 2026-04-12

Modum Atelier has completed a renovation of the library at Chengdu Shude Experimental Middle School, a project designed to serve multiple functions beyond reading. The library, located on the ground floor of a building from the 1970s–80s, required updates to accommodate meetings, flexible teaching, teacher preparation, and exhibitions. The original design of the structure was unrecorded due to multiple renovations and ownership changes over time. Lead architects Zhou Ruizhe and Yang Junbo led the design team, which included Wen bifu, Liao xin, and Li xiner. The project covers an area of 379 m² and was completed in 2025. Curated by HAN Shuang, the renovation addresses typical challenges of updating old school buildings within an orthogonal grid space. Engineering was handled by Chengdu Tianzhongcheng Information Technology Co., Ltd., and photographs were taken by Guowei Liu. The school sought a strategic prototype to transform the space into a versatile educational environment.
